Change gait near the boundary between the current and next gait sections. October demo players describe aligning the rider with the line between the boxes before switching. Treat that cue as a way to reduce gait errors while you practice the low jumps.
Wait for the boundary
Watch the current gait box as the horse approaches the next one. Use the join between the sections as your reference. Asking as soon as you see the next box can put the horse into the new gait too early.
Hold the gait through its section
Once you make a transition, stay in the requested gait through that section and look ahead to the next boundary. Practice the same transition until you can tell which change improved your feedback.
Give the low obstacles their own attention
Caprilli also includes low jumps. Make a controlled approach without losing track of the current gait cue. The Steam discussion on Caprilli timing gives October players' accounts of the transition cue.
